The Lost Sun
by Letso Okoroafor, RN

After participating in the Bullying & Incivility Project, I gained more insight on the ways in which individuals can experience bullying or incivility. Some actions may be more obvious than others, but any form of it can have a great impact on the victim. For my creative reflection, I decided to write a poem in the perspective of someone who is experiencing bullying and incivility in the hospital environment and how it's impacting her experience as a nurse.

The victim knows that her colleagues are talking about her because they constantly whisper and stare at her when she’s around. The victim begins to question her actions and wonders if there is something specific she’s done to be treated this way even though in reality, she’s done nothing wrong. The victim is a new nurse on the unit, and she was hired when the manager realized that her constant positivity and kindness would make her a great asset to the team. However, because she is a new addition to a well-acquainted team, the team is failing to welcome a new person because it disrupts their familiarity with each other.

The victim then begins to question if the job is even worth it because she does everything she’s supposed to do and still receives hostility. The victim eventually realizes that this negative environment is tainting the career she’s dreamed of her whole life and goes on to share her concerns with her manager in hopes that she will be treated with more respect.

I named my poem The Lost Sun, because I envision the victim as a person who lives her life with a vibrant positive attitude but feels lost in the sense that the constant negativity is causing her to question her worth. Instead of contributing to a negative environment, individuals should radiate positivity, especially in environments that should be dedicated to healing and caring for others.
